KAI

Kai heard Haven yell in her excitement, and a shiver went down his spine.

What sounds would she make for me?

He pushed the thought aside and ran for her, jumping over ankle traps and circumnavigating the climbing field just in time to see her snag the ball and run for the other team’s rift.

The blacklight made her hair glow and shimmered on the leather of her jacket. He could sense her delight by the way her feet danced on the floor. She was pure glee in motion.

But she was too busy celebrating to think like a soldier.

“Quicksand,” he shouted, hoping she could change course at the last instant.

She turned, but one of the bots was on her.

Kai could see her glance down at the orb in her hands and then smile.

The next thing he knew, she was tossing the orb to her opponent.

No.

She was hurling it at him.

Kai watched in awe as the orb bounced off the bot’s chest and back into Haven’s arms.

The bot looked down at his chest, just as his vest expanded outward, sending him rolling toward the sidelines.

Haven shrieked out her victory and turned just in time to see the second bot attacking.

She launched herself onto the climbing field pyramid just as Kai arrived.

“Hey,” he yelled, hoping to distract the thing.

It turned to him for an instant, then leaped onto the climbing field after Haven.

Kai was hot on its trail. He grabbed onto one metal arm and lifted his blade.

“Avenge me,” Haven yelled out, distracting him.

He looked up to see her fling herself heedlessly off the very top of the pyramid, ball in hand.

But she was up too high. She was soft and Terran. The fall would injure her…

Everything seemed to slow down.

He watched his angel fly through the air, arms extended to dunk the orb into the rift, then deftly flick her blade to attack… herself.

The laser made contact as she fell away from the rift, and her vest expanded. She hit the floor and bounced once, then came to a stop.

A waterfall of harsh cries emitted from the puffball that was his teammate. Kai ran for her, desperate to find out which part of her was broken and how he could help.

The lights strobed purple to celebrate their victory, a bitter irony when his mate was hurt.

He reached her and grabbed for the material of the vest, wrenching it until he could pull the cord that would deflate it and allow him to check on his darling.

The tray lights on the ceiling came on as the vest deflated, and he could see that she was smiling.

The world stuttered back into motion as he finally interpreted the noise she was making.

It was hysterical laughter.

Part of him wanted to shout and scream at her for risking her health and safety for a stupid game. How could she possibly have known that would work, or that her vest would inflate in time?

But her joy was infectious, and he found himself lying down next to her, laughing and looking up at the pretend stars on the ceiling.
